Bregman / Deutsch Chimaera - 47 minutes in bifurcated attention

The point of departure for this podcast comprises two publications from the mid nineties: ‘Musical Illusions and Paradoxes’ by Diana Deutsch and ‘Demonstrations of Auditory Scene Analysis: The Perceptual Organization of Sound’ by Albert S. Bregman and Pierre A. Ahad. These CDs feature demonstrations of the research in psychoacoustics (Bregman) and musical psychology (Deutsch) by their respective authors.
Both volumes are introduced with a spoken commentary by the authors themselves and accompanied by extensive booklets that further describe what is heard as well as instructions and suggestions on parameters such as playback volume, loudspeaker position, distance from the same, and whether headphones are required or not.
Here the recorded and textual components form a prescriptive double, a package where the listener verifies the CDs objectives though a subjective audible encounter.

We dig up some unreleased bits of our conversation with the Tasmanian-born, Berlin-based experimental cellist and sound artist Anthea Caddy. We talk about the dialogue between her practice and science and academia, but also about infrasound, long wave data, mirrors, reflection, the ungraspable and the negotiation with the environment and space.

Research process: Jacob Kirkegaard
In 2014, we interviewed Danish artist Jacob Kirkegaard as part of a research project entitled ON LISTENING. This podcast takes us back to that conversation, where Kirkegaard reflected on the importance of listening and argues that sound art can create purely sensory spaces that go beyond our immediate perception, helping us to grasp the unfathomable.

Roc Jiménez de Cisneros talks about EVOL’s very free deconstruction and reinterpretation of György Ligeti's 'Continuum' and Hanne Darboven’s 'Opus 17A', and how these works relate to the duo's current artistic practice. Unusual notions of time in relation to music, algorithmic reverse engineering, complexity through simplicity, anti-climax, ancient trance music, weird mental states and Dick Higgins’ Superboredom concept pop up in the conversation.
Playing phenomena as a compositional material
This mix explores how the use of aural phenomena can manifest in its many forms to become the key element in a compositional practice. By engaging in the use of such expanded sonic techniques the composer can act to create a recalibration of the listeners sense of hearing and by so doing, allow for a reconsideration of what constitutes sonic composition.
