Spain’s photographic heritage played an important role in the Centre Internacional de Fotografia Barcelona (CIFB), a groundbreaking institution founded by Albert Guspi that carried out significant work in the field of photography between 1978 and 1983. The Centre, which was a school, exhibition gallery, library, cinema and bar all rolled into one, focused on teaching, dissemination and production and played a central role in the debate around photography during Spain’s transtion to democracy.
As a result of a long-term research project, MACBA now presents an exhibition and a book that reintroduces the public to the short-lived experience of this unique centre. The exhibition brings together almost 600 images on everyday life in Barcelona, along with related documentation that has never been shown (posters, publications, articles, pamphlets…) and that will become part of the holdings of the MACBA Study Centre. Meanwhile, the publication includes interviews and testimonies from many of the individuals who participated in the CIFB, and who constitute an essential source of oral history for future research.
