Eugeni Bonet

download

Eugeni Bonet (Barcelona, 1954) has loomed large for several generations of artists and theorists interested in film, video and digital media. Since the early seventies, Bonet has been exploring the potentialities of image-movement, in an exercise of transversal writing that connects us to other possible types of film beyond film.

His experimental artistic practice includes genuine audiovisual tests such as filmesculturas, multiprojections, and works on demontage and found footage, concepts that Bonet has also developed at the theoretical level. His work as curator and writer focuses on ideas such as audiovisual appropriation, the expanded image, the properties of video and television formats, and on the work of artists like Michael Snow, Juan Downey and José Val del Omar.

To coincide with the exhibition The Listening Eye. Eugeni Bonet: Screens, Projects and Writings, SON[I]A talks to Eugeni Bonet and to the curator of the show Valentín Roma. They both talk about the lines of research that the project has developed around.

We dig up some unreleased fragments of the conversation with artist and researcher Eugènia Balcells, which we were unable to use the first time around. We share notes on her work Fuga—which she considers seminal to her practice and to her relationship with light—and on the educational project Veure la llum, which was carried out as part of her exhibition Seeing the Light at MACBA in 1996. To wrap up, we talk about her vison for the Eugènia Balcells Foundation: 400 hectares at Les Gavarres, where she can bring together her legacy and establish interdisciplinary dialogue in nature.
