This film programme presents the first retrospective of the cinematographic work of Hollis Frampton, filmmaker, photographer and pioneer in digital art. In the most accomplished films of Frampton's work, language is simultaneously both motive and agent. Likewise, the combination of still and moving images is continually explored in Frampton's films and is put at the service of a constant and inquisitive philosophic perspective on the fundamentally disjunctive nature of experience and perception, which is in consonance with Frampton's belief that cinema is a "metaphor of consciousness".
SON[I]A speaks with George Stolz, curator of the cycle, and reviews the filmmaker's career, his literary beginnings, his photographic work at the end of the 1950s and his incursion into experimental cinema in the mid-1960s. His cinematographic views are based on the tension between the image and the word and between the still image and the moving image, as well as his important philosophical role in photographic, cinematographic and videographic languages. The programme includes fragments of audio from the Hollis Frampton film "Critical Mass" (1971).
